What Granules in Your Gutters Tell You About Your Roof

You may not realize it, but your roof has a way of communicating with homeowners. If you’ve ever cleaned your gutters only to find shingle sediment or granules in them, then your roof is definitely trying to tell you something. Unfortunately, what that something is may not be good.

What Are the Tiny Granules in Your Gutters?

Roofing manufacturers produce asphalt shingles with mineral granules on the topmost layer. This is what gives your shingles their color and, more importantly, is also its way of protecting your roof from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. This granule coverage helps your roof withstand many years of rain, wind, hail and other things that Mother Nature may decide to throw its way.

Unfortunately, even the highest quality asphalt shingle roof will lose this granule coverage over time. In residential roofing systems, a sure sign that your roof is reaching the end of its service life is when there is a large presence of granules in your gutters.

If your roof is newly installed or if there was a recent storm, you can expect a small number of granules in your gutters. This is completely normal and is nothing that should concern you. However, if you are seeing a large number of granules in your gutters to the point that they are coming out of your downspouts, then it is best that you seek the help of a roofing professional as it could mean that you are due for a replacement soon.
